North America’s Highest Chairlift, Breckenridge’s Imperial Express SuperChair to open Wednesday

Today, Breckenridge Ski Resort announced its plan to open the Imperial Express SuperChair on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012; signifying 100 percent of Breck’s 31 lifts are now open to the public. In addition, approximately 250 acres of expert terrain will also open to the public on Wednesday, including Imperial Ridge and the Peak 7 bowl.

“The Breckenridge Ski Patrol has worked extremely hard and been very diligent to open up our terrain as soon as we feel it is safe to do so,” said the Breckenridge Ski Patrol Director. “Getting the Imperial Express Super Chair open is key for us to get the rest of our alpine terrain open for our guests.”

North America’s highest chairlift, The Imperial Express SuperChair, was installed in Breckenridge in 2005 and tops out at 12,840 feet, after a quick 2.7 minute ride to the top of the Imperial Bowl. Weather permitting; it gives skiers and riders easy access to three high-alpine bowls and hike-to access to the famed Lake Chutes and Snow White areas of Peak 8.

Breckenridge Ski Resort requires all skiers and riders to observe all posted signs and warnings. Closed trails may contain hazards due to limited natural snow coverage or changes in snowfall and weather. Please keep off closed trails and out of closed areas for safety reasons.

Budweiser Snow Sculpture Carving Week

January 24-28, 2012 Sculpting Week- Sculpting begins at 11:00 a.m.on Tuesday, January 24 with a shotgun start and sculpting ends on Saturday, January 28 at 10:00 a.m. The awards ceremony will be on Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 3:30 p.m.
January 29 - February 5, 2012 Viewing Week - (Please note that visitors are welcome at this free event anytime from January 24 to February 5- not just during viewing week.) During viewing week, the artists are done sculpting, but the sculptures are here for your viewing pleasure. Weather permitting the snow sculptures will stay up until the night of Sunday, February 5, 2012 and then they will disappear under the darkness of night- just as magically as they appeared! We say that viewing week is weather permitting because every once in a while we need to take down a sculpture that is about to fall due to warm weather. Over the past few years we have only taken down one or two sculptures due to weather so it is a pretty good bet that you will be able to see all or most of the sculptures (and without the crowds!).

2012 Photos of Summit County - Take Another Peak

Throughout 2012, I will be posting photos featuring new perspectives of our many beautiful surroundings as I enjoy the activities available in Summit County, Colorado.

During a trail run after work, I captured a silhouette of Peak 1 and Peak 2 from a ridge in the Frisco Peninsula Recreation Recreation Area.  The Frisco Adventure Park is located on the Peninsula and features a multi-lane tubing hill, terrain park and a 4,000 square foot day lodge.  During the summer of 2011, The park added a bike park designed to appeal to all levels of riders and all styles of bikes.  Outside the Frisco Adventure Park, the Recreation Area hosts mountain bikers, runners and hikers who enjoy trials winding through the forest and along the shores of Lake Dillon.  A ball field with a view of surrounding mountains attracts families and groups.  In the winter, the Peninsula is home to the Frisco Nordic Center, a playground for cross-country skiers, snowshoers and biathletes.

2012 Photos of Summit County - Half Moon Basin

Throughout 2012, I will be posting photos featuring new perspectives of our many beautiful surroundings as I enjoy the activities available in Summit County, Colorado.

One of the many reasons I live in Summit County is the close proximity to four major ski resorts.  This afternoon my wife and I went to A-Basin just before 3 p.m., parked in the front row, got in three runs and finished with a beverage on the sunny deck of the day lodge.  As the sun started to set, I captured this photo of the moon above the East Wall of A-Basin with wonderful light!
